Nutrition and Supplements
Brain function depends on a wide range of biological processes, many of which require adequate nutritional support. Vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and other micronutrients play essential roles in neurotransmitter synthesis, cellular metabolism, myelination, and inflammatory regulation.
For example, vitamin B6 is a required cofactor in the synthesis of several neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin. As the body does not synthesise vitamin B6, it must be obtained through diet or supplementation. Similar dependencies exist for many other nutrients involved in normal nervous system function.
That said, nutrition is supportive rather than curative. Supplements do not replace medical treatment, rehabilitation, or psychological intervention, and their effects are context-dependent.
Our relationship with Metagenics
Ormond Neuroscience is an accredited practitioner supplier of Metagenics products. This allows us to recommend and provide access to supplements that meet recognised quality, testing, and manufacturing standards.
Metagenics is an established company with several decades of experience in practitioner-grade nutritional products. Their formulations are developed with attention to ingredient sourcing, bioavailability, and quality assurance. Where we recommend supplements, it is on the basis of plausibility, available evidence, and clinical judgement—not marketing claims.
Patients are under no obligation to purchase supplements through our practice, and alternative options may be discussed where appropriate.
When supplements may be considered
Supplementation may be considered in selected situations, including:
- documented or suspected nutritional insufficiency
- increased physiological demand (e.g. recovery from illness or injury)
- adjunctive support for inflammatory, metabolic, or neurological vulnerability
Recommendations are individualised and conservative. More is not assumed to be better.
Selected supplements we commonly discuss
Some products are more frequently relevant to brain and nervous system health than others. Examples include:
- SPM Active®
A source of specialised pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), which are involved in the physiological resolution of inflammation. Evidence in humans is still emerging, and use is considered adjunctive. - PhytoMulti®
A comprehensive multivitamin formulation that includes vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, intended to support general nutritional adequacy rather than target specific symptoms. - OmegaGenics® EPA-DHA 1000
A formulation providing omega-3 fatty acids, which are relevant to neuronal membrane integrity and inflammatory signalling.
Not all supplements are appropriate for all individuals, and potential interactions or contraindications are always considered.
